John Muir (one of the most famous sons of the University of Wisconsin), is credited with inspiring the environmental movement that emerged in the United States as the early 20th century. Most are aware of his luminous writing about the Sierra Nevada mountain range (he called it the "range of light") and Yosemite Valley, but few are aware of the spiritual roots of his approach to the creation. Cal DeWitt has been researching Muir's spiritual origins, and brings this material to the public for the first time.

"Evangelicals and Scientists: A New Consensus
on Caring for Creation"
7:30-9:30 p.m., Friday, February 9th, 2007
Wisconsin State Historical Society Auditorium, 816 State St. Mall, Madison, WI (across Langdon Street from the Memorial Union)

On Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, leaders of the evangelical and scientific communities announced an unprecedented joint effort to protect the global environment and advance policies that address some of the most pressing threats to our planet, including global warming, habitat destruction, pollution, and species extinctions.

Spearheaded by the National Association of Evangelicals and scientists at the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School, the newly formed collaboration is 28 members strong and growing. Professor DeWitt, one of those members, will speak on how and why this collaboration is emerging at this point in history.

Both religious and non-religious persons will be interested in understanding this collaboration between scientists and evangelicals, the latter being an increasingly powerful force in our society but one not previously known for its passion for the environment.

To see the press release of the January 17 press conference on "An Urgent Call to Action: Scientists and Evangelicals Unite to Protect Creation,” visit http://chge.med.harvard.edu/media/releases/jan_17.html.  For a report of the event in Grist, the online environmental news magazine, with links to stories in the Washington Post, Scientific American, and the Houston Chronicle, visit http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2007/01/18/1030/8992.

Private Film Showing and Celebration:

When Heaven Meets Earth
7:30-9:30 p.m. on February 8th, 2007

at The Crossing Campus Ministry,
1127 University Ave., Madison

“When Heaven Meets Earth” is a film by Susan Drake Emmerich and Jeff Pohorski which chronicles the faith-based approach used to resolve a conflict between Chesapeake Bay watermen and environmentalists as well as the continuing study of the watermen and their influence on farmers in southern Pennsylvania, facilitated by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. The farmers, like the watermen, found hope and healing for their conflict with environmentalists by embracing and applying their faith to stewardship of the land and to loving their neighbors. A reception with Susan and Jeff will follow the film showing.
